Previously, Dr. Heller was System Director of Ethics and Theology for Providence Health & Services, a faith-based not-for-profit healthcare organization on the West Coast and based in Seattle. He provided leadership in ethics throughout the system, and for its board and its administrative and clinical leaders. Before going to Providence, he was the founding Director of the Center for Ethics in Health Care at Saint Joseph's Health System in Atlanta. There, he led the development of a national consulting service for organizations needing guidance in their ethics and compliance programs.

He is also a priest in the Episcopal Church, and served on the church's Task Force on Ethics and the New Genetics. With his wife, Linda, he enjoys sailing their Outbound 46, Evensong, in the newly-named Salish Sea whenever he can get away.
