Clinical Ethics Consultation Service

Who are the Ethics Consultants?

Jeff Farroni, PhD, JD, Director, UTMB Institutional Ethics Program
Michele Carter, PhD, Consultant

Patients, their families, and health care practitioners sometimes face ethically hard, confusing, or conflicted choices. When this happens, they may not be sure how to make the best or right choice. The UTMB Ethics Consultation Service facilitates discussion, analysis and understanding of ethical issues in patient care, and provides ethically appropriate recommendations for solving problems arising in health care practice and research.

The Ethics Consultant will:

  • promote a process of open, shared decision-making among the participants in the consultation
  • facilitate a discussion about the ethics concerns identified and possible responses to them
  • communicate the relevant analysis and follow-up recommendations of the consultation to appropriate individuals
Consultants for the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service can be contacted at 409-747-1230 (after-hours and on weekends and holidays a recorded message supplies a pager number to reach the on-call consultant).
